Drilling Waste Disposal-Pit Burial

The use of earthen or lined pits is integral to drilling waste management. During most China drilling operations, the drilling cuttings separated by the shale shaker are sent to a pit called the reserve pit located near the drill rig. The pit is generally open to the atmosphere, so it also accumulates stormwater and washwater from the rig.

The strategic location of small pits near drilling sites can also help minimize spillage of drilling waste. Unless site characteristics are such that no significant threat to water resources can occur, liners are generally required. Where pits must be constructed adjacent to water bodies or on sloping terrain, engineering precautions incorporated into the design will help to ensure pit integrity. Precautions should be taken to prevent disposal of chemicals, refuse, debris, or other materials not intended for pit disposal.

At the end of the drilling job, any hydrocarbon products floating on top of the pits are recovered and any free water or other liquids are collected and disposed of, usually in an injection well. The remaining cuttings are covered in place using native soils, the surface is graded to prevent water accumulation, and the area is revegetated with native species to reduce the potential for erosion and promote full recovery of the area's ecosystem. Reserve pits should be closed as soon as possible following the generally accepted closure procedures in the region.

For drilling waste with constituent concentrations only slightly higher than those allowed for traditional pit burial, the drilling waste may be blended with clean, local soil to dilute and reduce the high concentrations to acceptable levels before the drilling waste mix is buried. The objective of this approach is to incorporate drilling waste that meet required criteria into the soil at a level below the major rooting zone for plants but above the water table. Costs for such burial depend on the volume of soil required to be mixed to bring concentrations of oil and grease to within appropriate oil and grease limits, pit excavation costs, and loading/hauling costs of soils and drilling cuttings.

Mono Screw Pump Working Principle and Apllication

M ono screw pump , also called  sewage pump  or  progressive cavity pump ,  belongs to the rotor type positive displacement pump .   M ono screw pump  is depend ing  on the screw meshing with liner on the discharge and suction cavity to conveying liquid volume change.   It is a kind of method of pressurized screw pump, a main working parts by bushing has a double helix cavity (stator) and the stator cavity and its meshing singlehead screw screw (rotor).   When the input shaft through the universal joint drive making planets revolving around the center of the stator, rotor stator, rotor, vice is continuous mesh form sealed cavity, the seal chamber volume invariably uniform axial movement, the medium from the suction end of deputy to the stator, rotor pressure side, the suction medium sealed cavity through the stator without stirring and destruction. M ono screw pump  is an ideal pump used to feed drilling fluids to decanter centrifuge. Since mud is evenly pushed to pro

Water Based Mud Drilling Cuttings Management

In  geotechnical engineering ,   drilling fluid is used to aid the drilling of  boreholes   into the earth , o ften used while drilling  oil  and  natural gas  wells and on exploration drilling rigs , and  also for much simpler boreholes  like   water wells . Liquid drilling fluid is often called drilling mud. The three main categories of drilling fluids are water-based mud (which can be dispersed and non-dispersed), non-aqueous mud, usually called oil-based mud, and gaseous drilling fluid, in which a wide range of  gases  can be used. The main functions of drilling fluids include :  providing  hydrostatic pressure  to prevent  formation fluids  from entering into the well bore, keeping the  drill bit  cool and clean during drilling, carrying out drill cuttings, and suspending the drill cuttings while drilling is paused and when the drilling assembly is brought in and out of the hole. The drilling fluid used for a particular job is selected to avoid formation damage  and to limi

Drilling Waste Management Approach and Method

Drilling waste management is a hot topic these years with global attention to environmental protection, especially in O il & gas industry. Drilling waste management  into environment without any treatment is strictly forbidden. So before disposal, a series methods must be introduced to treat the cuttings and make it reach to disposal standard. Drill ing   waste   is  produced as the rock is broken by the drill bit advancing through the rock or soil; the cuttings are usually carried to the surface by  drilling fluid  circulating up from the drill bit   by  rotary ,  percussion , or auger methods. The drill ing waste  is commonly examined to make a record (a  well log ) of the subsurface materials penetrated at various depths. In the oil and gas industry, this is often called a  mud log .   One drilling method that does not produce drill ing   waste  is  core drilling , which instead produces solid cylinders of rock or soil.   In cable-tool drilling, the drilling waste  i
